On the weekend of Saturday 1st to Sunday 2nd October saw the Taitans Rugby team participate in the biggest event in the history of the campus, The Driftwood sevens tournament, the last of the games of the Kenya sevens circuit.
32 teams were present of which 16 were participating in division one which included some of the most talented players in the international rugby scene, namely Humphrey Kayange, Collins Injera, Biko Adema, Larry Asego, and the most prestigious Kenya rugby clubs which included Kenya Harlequins, Mwamba, Nondescript, Mean machine(UoN),Impala. The rest of the 16 included upcoming teams which included Daystar, Mombasa Polytechnic, Pwani University, others and us. We were in group C of our division with Pwani University and Daystar.
We travelled to Friday on 30th Friday to Mombasa so we could get plenty of rest and also to adapt to the hot humid climate. The games started on Saturday 1st October at 10am where we played our first game verses Daystar university who out classed us in experience and strength to win 35-0.Our second game was verses our Coastal rivals Pwani University who matched our skills and strength but drew 0-0.We thus qualified for the Division II main cup quarters which were to start on Sunday. The next day we started with daystar again who we out to revenge our first defeat but we were defeated in the last minute 21-14. So we went to the semis of the Plate against the Spartans where we won 14-0. Our final match was the Plate finals verses Mombasa Polytechnic who we played with all that we had but they took advantage of their experience to win us 17-7.
The JKUAT fraternity lost a great rugby player on Saturday night James Nyongesa who drowned while swimming at night in the place they were residing , may his soul rest in eternal peace.
We would like to thank all our fans for their never ending faith in us and support, and our players for show what they can achieve despite the obvious bulk of challenges we face while they train and for their hard work, perseverance and passion for the great game of Rugby.Kudos Taitans.
